What Is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry refers to dental services provided to address urgent dental issues that require immediate attention. This can include anything from a toothache to an abscess or even broken or knocked-out teeth.

At Amazing Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, we understand that these situations can be stressful and that immediate, professional care is critical. We strive to provide a calm, comforting environment where we can quickly assess and address your child’s dental emergency.

What To Do When Your Child Has A Dental Emergency

Properly handling a dental emergency can make a significant difference both for your child’s comfort and recovery. Below, we have provided some essential guidelines to help you navigate through the most common dental emergencies and ensure the best outcome for your child.

Knocked-Out Tooth
If your child’s permanent tooth gets knocked out, find the tooth and rinse it gently without touching the root. If you can, try to place it back in the socket. If this isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk or saliva and contact us immediately.

In the case of a lost primary tooth, do not try to place the tooth back in the socket; this could cause damage to the developing permanent tooth and surrounding gum tissue. Instead, contact our office, so we can examine the gums for damage and place a space maintainer if needed.

Broken Tooth
It is imperative to seek treatment as soon as possible following a tooth fracture to prevent infection or further damage to the tooth. Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling. Contact our office to schedule restorative treatment.

Toothache
If your child is experiencing a toothache, rinse the mouth with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any trapped food particles. If the pain persists, please contact our office. We will need to examine the tooth to determine what is causing the problem.

Dental Abscess
If you notice a pimple-like swelling on your child’s gum, this could be an abscess. Rinse their mouth with salt water and contact us as soon as possible. Abscesses are serious infections that can spread to other parts of the body if not treated promptly.

The Importance Of Prompt Emergency Care

Immediate attention to dental emergencies is crucial not just to alleviate discomfort but also to prevent further complications. Delaying care can often lead to more extensive damage and, consequently, more complex and expensive treatments down the line. Our practice prioritizes emergency cases and makes every effort to see and treat your child as soon as possible.
