What Are Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces are orthodontic devices used to correct misaligned or crowded teeth, overbite, underbite, and other dental issues that could cause problems in the future. They consist of brackets, which are bonded to each tooth, and archwires, which apply gentle, consistent pressure to gradually move the teeth into their correct positions. The archwires are typically held in place by small elastic bands, which can be customized with a variety of colors for a fun and personalized touch.

When Are Traditional Braces Necessary?

The need for traditional braces is determined by your child’s orthodontist after a comprehensive dental examination. This usually includes x-rays, photographs, and sometimes a mold of the child’s teeth. Children with crowded or overlapping teeth, gaps, or malocclusions (problems with the bite) are often candidates for traditional braces.

While braces can be beneficial at any age, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation no later than age seven, when their adult teeth have started to emerge.

How Are Traditional Braces Applied & Maintained?

The process of applying traditional braces involves a few steps.

  • First, the teeth are cleaned and dried.
  • Then, a bonding adhesive is applied to each tooth, and the brackets are placed on top. The adhesive is then hardened with a special light.
  • Once the brackets are in place, the orthodontist threads the archwire through each bracket and secures it with elastic bands.

Maintenance of traditional braces requires diligent oral hygiene. It’s important for your child to brush their teeth after every meal to prevent food particles from getting trapped in the braces, potentially leading to cavities or gum disease. Regular visits to our office are crucial to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed.

Why Choose Traditional Braces?

While modern orthodontic treatments like clear aligners may seem appealing due to their discreet appearance, traditional braces offer several advantages. They are typically more effective at treating severe cases of misalignment or malocclusion. They are also less reliant on patient compliance; while clear aligners can be removed, leading to potential misuse, traditional braces are fixed and continuously work towards improving your child’s smile. Moreover, with the option to choose colorful bands, children often enjoy the opportunity to express their personal style through their braces.

At Amazing Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, we believe that every child deserves to smile with confidence. Traditional braces can play a crucial role in making this happen. They not only enhance your child’s appearance but also improve their oral health, reducing the risk of dental problems down the line.
